  • Who we are

The Union Catholique Africaine de la Presse (UCAP) also known as the African Catholic Union of the Press, is an African Forum of Professionals and Institutions in Secular and Religious Journalism (Communication). It is an independent, autonomous and professional African Catholic entity composed of African Catholic communicators, academics, researchers and institutions in all classifications of media and communication. It is a non-political and non-profit association which exists to create platforms for the enhancement of professional skills and promotion of Christian (Catholic) and positive journalistic values. It is recognised by the Holy See.  

  • Our Objectives
    To promote the right to information, freedom of opinion and professional ethics
  • To promote Christian values (peace, unity, fraternity, justice, probity, reconciliation etc)
  • To initiate opportunities for training and retraining of communication practitioners in line with global developments and the needs of the African continent.
  • To create an enabling platform for constructive professional networking and linkages among members of the Union, with particular regard to exchange of information and experiences, and media development.
  • To organize events (conferences, workshops and refresher programs) to encourage exchange of ideas and experiences, and to stimulate reflection, discussion and dialogue on matters of professional interest among communication practitioners on the continent.
  • To promote professionalism among communication practitioners as well as communication research and other educational activities that may contribute to knowledge in media and communication in Africa.
  • To promote communication as a means of empowerment, especially among minorities, in Africa.
  • To collaborate with the Catholic Church in Africa through its Communications' offices on the national, regional and Continental levels. 

Mombasa May 15th, 2018: Catholic journalists from across the continent are expected to congregate in Cape Town, South Africa between 9th and 13th September, this year for the Union of the Catholic African Press (UCAP) 2018 Conference. The conference to be held in collaboration with the Southern African Catholic Bishops’ Conference will bring together Journalists working for both the church and secular media at Schoenstatt Retreat and Conference Centre, in Cape Town.  The theme for the conference is ‘Using the Media for Promotion of Integral Human Development in Africa.’ The theme will be subdivided into four sub themes:   

  • Journalism for truth and reconciliation in the Church and of service to peoples;    
  • Promoting Peace, Truth and Reconciliation in Africa in a Digital Age;
  • Making the Church more relevant to the Youth in the Church in Africa and
  • Promoting the Social teachings of the Church through the Media in Africa.

A number of top journalists and clergy involved in the communication work in their respective Episcopal Conferences, countries and dioceses have expressed interest to attend this auspicious function.The Congress goes to Cape Town at a time Catholics in Southern Africa are celebrating the 200 years of the establishment of the Catholic Church in the region. In recent years, UCAP Congresses have been held in Bamako-Mali; Mombasa-Kenya; Ouaga Dougou-Burkina Faso, Addis Ababa-Ethiopia and Dar es Salaam Tanzania. Delegates will stay at Schoenstatt Retreat and Conference Centre, Nestling in the rural Constantia Valley of beauty and tranquility. This is a peaceful environment where individuals are able to rejuvenate their physical, spiritual and emotional wellbeing.
