Rev. Father Dieudonné NIYIBIZI from Bujumbura, Burundi takes us through:

“The Preferential Option for the Poor, a new "news value"

The universal destination of goods requires special attention to the poor, to those in marginal situations and to people whose living conditions restrain appropriate growth. The social teachings of the Church gives them an important place, a special attention.

What place do they occupy in the media? How can we leave the center, go down, and find them in the social and anthropological peripheries and so lift them to the first pages of our media?

The preferential option for the poor could be a transversal news value in the selection of news.

Pope Francis in Evangelii Gaudium insistently reminds us about that. The poor deserves to be defended and his rights to be promoted. By justice and charity, more journalists should report facts and events taking place in the peripheral places. The news value of proximity sends the journalist back to the African peripheries and instead of waiting African peripheral news from mainstream media.
